Frequently Asked Questions

New to holistic medicine? We understand you may have questions. Here are the answers to the most common inquiries from our Austin patients.
About Acupuncture
What exactly is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the insertion of extremely thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body known as "acupoints."

From a biomedical perspective, this stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain (such as endorphins). These natural chemicals can change the experience of pain and trigger the release of other hormones that regulate the body's internal regulatory system.

Does it hurt?

This is the most common question we get! The needles we use are hair-thin—about the width of a cat’s whisker. Most people feel very little when they are inserted.

Once the needle is in place, you may feel a sensation known as "De Qi," which can feel like a heavy, dull ache, a slight tingle, or a warm sensation. This is a good sign that the energy is moving. It should never feel sharp or stinging. Many patients find the experience so relaxing that they fall asleep on the table.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a licensed practitioner. Dr. Ashley Card holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACOM) and is rigorously trained.

We strictly adhere to Clean Needle Technique (CNT) protocols. We use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles. There is virtually no risk of infection, and side effects are rare and typically mild (such as slight bruising at the needle site).

Your Treatment Journey
What should I expect at my first visit?

Your initial visit is comprehensive and lasts about 90 minutes. We begin with a detailed conversation about your health history, lifestyle, and goals. Dr. Card will perform TCM diagnostic methods, including feeling your pulse and looking at your tongue.

After the consultation, you will receive your first treatment, which may include acupuncture, cupping, or bodywork depending on your needs. You will leave with a clear treatment plan tailored to you.

How many sessions will I need?

Because TCM treats the root cause rather than just masking symptoms, it is a cumulative process. The number of treatments depends on the severity and duration of your condition.

Generally, for acute issues (like a recent sprain), 2-4 treatments may suffice. For chronic conditions (like long-term digestive issues or hormonal imbalances), we typically recommend a course of 6-10 treatments to see lasting change. We will discuss a realistic timeline during your first visit.

Integrative Services
How does sound healing differ from acupuncture?

While acupuncture uses physical needles to stimulate energy flow along meridians, Sound Healing uses vibration and frequency. Instruments like tuning forks and singing bowls are used to create resonance that calms the nervous system.

Sound healing is non-invasive (no needles), making it an excellent option for children, those with needle phobia, or anyone seeking deep emotional relaxation and nervous system regulation.

What is Herbal Medicine and do I need it?

Chinese Herbal Medicine involves the use of plant, mineral, and animal substances to treat internal imbalances. Think of acupuncture as "physical therapy" for your energy, and herbs as "internal medicine."

Dr. Card may prescribe a custom herbal formula to extend the effects of your treatment between visits. This is particularly helpful for internal conditions like digestive disorders, menstrual issues, and insomnia.

Do you take insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider. This allows us to treat you based on your needs, not insurance limitations. However, many insurance plans do cover acupuncture.

We are happy to provide you with a detailed receipt called a Superbill upon request. You can submit this to your insurance provider for direct reimbursement, depending on your plan's out-of-network benefits. We recommend calling your insurance company beforehand to verify your acupuncture coverage.
